Professional Project (30 credits)

This unit requires students to conduct an in-depth research project on a chosen area of study, giving you a chance to demonstrate the skills and know-how you’ve acquired throughout the course. Through the project, you will be able to draw on the different strands of learning you’ve been taught so far. Plus, you will be given the opportunity to get some hands-on experience by engaging in a real project from your workplace.

Entry requirements

To enrol in the course, you will need the following:

A UK honours degree (2:2 or above) or an international equivalent PLUS a minimum of 3 years relevant work experience
OR significant management experience (10 years or more) and a record of achievement in business and leadership
ALL applicants must be a minimum of 25 years of age

These typical entry requirements apply to the 2022/23 academic year (1 September 2022 to 31 August 2023) of entry and may be subject to change for the 2023/24 academic year (1 September 2023 to 31 August 2024). English language requirements:

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to produce evidence of English language proficiency.

Overseas applicants will require IELTS with an overall score of 6.5 with no less than 5.5 in any category, or an equivalent accepted English qualification. Accepted English qualifications can be viewed here.

We provide a FREE Pearson English test to all applicants, if required, which can be requested from your enrolment advisor during the application process.

Studying online

Our online masters is designed to work around your work and life commitments. With a recommended study week of around 20 hours (depending on the unit), it can be completed in just two years.

Study around existing commitments, wherever you are – all you need is a laptop and an internet connection.

Using our Virtual Learning Environment you will enjoy a programme of highly interactive live online seminars and presentations and have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of group tasks with your fellow students across the globe.

Continued support will be provided by our Student Success Team who’ll be there to answer any queries you have and help you to get the most from your time with us – from the moment you enrol to the time you graduate.

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) comprises 180 credits. Students are normally expected to study 90 credits per year.

The programme is delivered on a continuous basis and units are scheduled sequentially. The order that units are delivered varies depending on the intake start date, although students will normally start with the Critical Reading, Writing and Literature Research unit. Methodological Approaches to Research and Professional Project will normally be the final units studied. All units are 15-credits with the exception of the 30-credit Professional Project.

Each 15-credit unit will normally be delivered over a 7-week teaching period. Weeks 1 to 6 comprise taught input. Week 7 provides students with an opportunity to consolidate learning before undertaking assessment towards the end of the week. The Professional Project unit is normally 14 weeks. There is normally a one-week Study Break between every unit.

Once submitted we will assess your application and make a decision on whether we can offer you a place on the course. This is usually within five working days of all required documents being uploaded.

Overall methods of assessment

You will be assessed by coursework.
Each unit is assessed by an assignment (typically 3,000 words, or equivalent). The nature of the assignment varies by unit. Examples may include an essay, case study, literature review, research brief, extended project, business analysis, and contributions to the discussion forum.
The Professional Project will normally take the form of a 10,000-word project-style essay.

Study and assessment breakdown

10 credits equate to 100 hours of study, which is a combination of live seminars, discussion boards and independent study. A Masters qualification typically comprises of 180 credits, a PgDip 120 credits, and a PgCert 60 credits. The exact composition of your study time and assessments for the course will vary according to your style of learning, but it could be:

Academic expertise

Emma Holt

Senior Lecturer, Programme Leader Global Online MBA and Global Online MSc Finance and Strategy, Solicitor (non-practising)

Prior to joining Manchester Met in 2019, Emma worked for almost 25 years in legal practice, including 10 years in senior leadership and management roles within the legal services sector. Emma has also developed significant experience in risk management.   

An experienced non-executive board director, Emma lectures on Strategy and Leadership, Business Law and Professional Development and has experience in teaching Governance, Risk and Control. She is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. 

Michael Flanagan

Lecturer in Accounting and Financial Management, Global Online MBA programme

Michael joined Manchester Metropolitan Business School and academia in 2008 after a 30-year career working in director-level roles at multinational organisations including Shell, Philips and Russell Hobbs.

Michael holds an MBA from Manchester University Business School and completed his PhD in Finance in 2013. His theses focused on mortgage mitigation options in the US market.

He particularly enjoys teaching postgraduate students finance, advanced performance management and research methods.

Dr Rosane Pagano

Principal Lecturer in Operations Management, Global Online MBA programme

Rosane’s career started in information systems development as a Systems Analyst, project managing business applications implementation. She worked with clients including Exxon, the Brazilian Navy, and Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (one of the largest global mining companies).

Since joining Manchester Metropolitan University Business School, Rosane has taught modules and supervised dissertations in business information technology, project management, operations management, business modelling, and decision-making. In addition, she has undertaken wider managerial roles overseeing the operations of the education programmes portfolio and international partnerships in the education sector.

Rosane holds a BSc (Hons) in Systems Engineering and a PhD in Applied Science from the Faculty of Engineering (Informatics) at the University of Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. She has also completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Education and holds a three-year Research Fellowship on the use of technology in education.

Rosane’s research interests include management in higher education, systems thinking, and sustainability in projects and operations.

Chris Midgley

Senior Lecturer – Leading Change and Creativity in Organisations (LCCO) – Global Online MBA programme

Prior to joining Manchester Metropolitan University in 2019, Chris led and delivered on a number of academic medical and clinical leadership development programmes in the Health Faculties of Sheffield Hallam and Edge Hill Universities. Before that, Chris had a sixteen-year background in Army Education – ultimately leading a portfolio of clinical redesign programmes with national outcomes.

Chris holds Masters degrees in both Human Resource Development and Performance Management, and also in Medical Physics, as well as an Executive MBA from Cranfield. Additionally, he has a PGCE in Post Compulsory Education and Training, and a Post Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education; he is a Chartered Manager and Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute, and Fellow of the Institute of Leadership and Management. Chris is completing the MMU-sponsored MA in Higher Education. Chris is probably addicted to studying.

Chris’ teaching interests are centred on leadership development education, change and innovation in organisations, organisational performance management, programme and project management, and professional development and identity.

Sumona Mukhuty

Lecturer in Leading, Managing and Developing People, Global Online MBA programme

After 12 years at Hull University Business School, Sumona joined Manchester Metropolitan University Business School in 2017 as a Principal Lecturer.

In addition to teaching the Leadership MBA module, Sumona is the lead lecturer for the undergraduate module ‘Introduction to Human Resource Management’ and is the Education Lead for the Department of People and Performance, responsible for designing and managing the delivery and assessment of all undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Sumona’s PhD, for which she was awarded a Northern Leadership Award, focused on Leadership and Emotional Intelligence in the National Health Service.

Her teaching specialisms and research interests include human resource management, organisational behaviour and work psychology.

Rohail Ashraf

Lecturer in Strategic Marketing, Global Online MBA programme

Rohail Ashraf is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Marketing, Retail and Tourism, part of the Faculty of Business and Law at Manchester Metropolitan University.

He has previously worked at King Abdulaziz University (Saudi Arabia), Lahore University of Management Sciences (Pakistan) and Kedge Business School (France).

Rohail has published articles in marketing journals including the Journal of Business Research, Psychology & Marketing, the Journal of Consumer Behaviour, Marketing Intelligence & Planning, the Asia Pacific Journal of Marketing & Logistics and the Asian Journal of Management Cases.

His research interests include branding, consumer emotions, bibliometrics and student sample idiosyncrasies. More recently, his work has evolved to study the dynamics of online relationships and the use of immersive technologies in marketing.

Robert Dixon

Lecturer in Strategic Management, Global Online MBA programme

Robert joined Manchester Metropolitan University in 2008 and has extensive lecturing experience at both a masters and undergraduate level.

He has particular expertise in strategy, change management, innovation, scale-up organisations, SMEs and associated research and practical challenges. Currently studying for a masters in Higher Education, Robert has a passion for all things business and enterprise and is keen to combine practice, theory and teaching within his role at the university.

With over 25 years’ commercial experience in both SMEs and blue-chip organisations, Robert considers himself a ‘pracademic’ – someone who both studies and practices in their field of expertise.

Outside of Manchester Met, Robert is the founder and owner of dixonspace.com, a co-working and serviced office business centre with a gym, a business mentor and investor with several SMEs, and a property investor and developer.

Stuart Barrett

Lecturer in Global Economic Environment, Global Online MBA programme

Stuart’s first degree was in Economics and Politics followed by an MSc in International Business Economics from the University of the West of England.

Stuart’s PhD focused on multinational investment in the United States. He has taught in both the School of Economics and the Business School at the University of the West of England, on the MBA at Bath University, and in the Department of Economics at Bristol University.

His research interests include foreign direct investment and trade blocs, and multinational strategy. His teaching specialisms include international business, business economics and Asia-Pacific economics.
