Frequently Asked Questions
Choosing the right online course can be a big step to take so we’ve taken the opportunity to help with your decision-making by answering the questions that our Enrolment Team are asked most frequently.
You can complete a Global Online masters degree in as little as two years, or take up to three years if you need to. We’ve designed the programme to be as flexible as possible, helping you to balance postgraduate study with your existing work and lifestyle commitments.
No. Our courses are delivered online, so you won’t be required to visit the Manchester Metropolitan University campus to undertake any units, exams or assessments. You’ll access your learning through our Virtual Learning Environment, which offers 24/7 access to a wide range of online learning materials (from video seminars to reading materials, discussion forums, support services and more).
Yes. We’ve designed Global Online in collaboration with online learning experts to make sure you benefit from the same excellent research-driven teaching as our on-campus students. Each Global Online course has a dedicated teaching team, who also deliver our on-campus programmes. Drawing on their wealth of research and industry experience, you can expect your learning to be as challenging and stimulating as an on-campus degree.
You’ll also have access to many support services that our on-campus students enjoy, including access to the University Library, disability services, well-being mentoring, counselling services and dedicated career and employability support.
You will need to complete a number of assessments and tasks for each unit of study. The format of these may vary, but you will complete all of them through the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), with no need to come to campus.
Global Online has been designed to work around your work and life commitments. The amount of required study time will vary for each student, but we recommend you spend a minimum of 15 hours a week studying for your masters degree.
It is recommended that you have the latest version of a major internet browser on your device e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer/Edge – in order to access the Virtual Learning Environment. If you are intending to study from a PC or laptop, you should have access to Windows 7 or later, or OS X 10.9 or later. Mobile devices should be running the latest versions of iOS or Android. You will need a reliable internet connection that runs at a minimum of 2mps, and you will also require headphones and a microphone to use the video conferencing software included in the VLE. These are the basic requirements, but technology platforms do change and additional browser plugins, settings, apps etc. may be required and will be advised from time to time by your Student Success Advisor.
If you have completed a qualification at a related level and with a similar syllabus to one of our units, exemptions are considered on a case-by-case basis. Please discuss this with your Enrolment Advisor during the application process.
One of our key priorities is ensuring you have access to the support you need to complete your degree successfully. As a Global Online student, you will be assigned a dedicated advisor from our Student Success Team, who will provide you with advice and guidance from a non-academic perspective. They will help you feel comfortable with learning online from the very beginning, making you feel at home with the Virtual Learning Environment and stay on track with your studies, all the way to graduation. You can find out more about a student success manager on our blog.
Your Student Success Advisor will also be able to connect you to useful Manchester Met services that you may need over the course of your time with us – be that our Careers and Employability Service, our Health and Wellbeing Service, Disability Services or our dedicated Learner Development Team.
Applying online couldn’t be easier. Your first step is to register on our online applicant portal and complete an application form. You’ll then need to prove your eligibility for the programme by uploading a photographic copy or scan of the following documents:
- Certificate and/or transcripts evidencing your academic and/or professional qualifications e.g. degree certificate
- Evidence of English language proficiency for non-native English speakers e.g. IELTS or free Pearson English test results
- Passport photo
You will also be asked to complete a personal statement detailing your motivations for studying your chosen course with Manchester Metropolitan University Global Online. We will let you know if any additional documents are needed.
Our Admissions Team aim to assess all standard applications and let you know our decision within five working days of all required documents being uploaded to the online applicant portal.
